Irwin Tools Night Race Fact Sheet
Monte Dutton

Johnny on the spot to fix all leaks: Irwin Tools Night Race.

There’s thunder in them thar hills: Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

It comes as no surprise that two brothers named Busch should head for the mountains: The Bee Bees – Brothers Busch – have combined to win eight times at this .533-mile oval. Five checkered flags have fallen to Kurt, the elder.

Chase epicenter: It’s at 12-13, where Clint Bowyer is in position to make the Chase and Mark Martin, by 35 points, isn’t. Those who trail by more than 100 points – Ryan Newman (-103), Jamie McMurray (-105), Kasey Kahne (-126), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (-129, David Reutimann (-165) and Juan Pablo Montoya (-173) – will need considerable help. Eleven Chase positions are almost completely secure since the occupant of 11th place, Greg Biffle, is 193 points ahead of Martin.

The interesting, the ironic and the wacky:

The first night race at Bristol was in 1978.

This is the 100th Cup race at Bristol. Jack Smith won the first in 1961. Jimmie Johnson won the 99th earlier this year.

G.C. Spencer failed to finish 20 Bristol races, the most all-time.

Jamie McMurray has never failed to finish a race at this track.

Joey Logano’s best Bristol finish, in three races, is 27th. Sam Hornish Jr.’s best finish, in five, is 29th.

Informative, humorous or quotable in some other sense:

“In this sport, you can never go back to a track with the exact same stuff and expect to do well.” – David Reutimann

“All of us like Bristol, no matter where we grew up racing.” – Martin Truex Jr.

“Bristol feels like the stands are on top of you.” – Matt Kenseth

“Bristol is a lot like Watkins Glen. You never know what’s going to happen.” – Kevin Harvick
